Mt. Olive History
Each of us and our families has arrived here by varied paths. All of us are here by God’s divine order. What follows is a brief history of the congregation we call our church family.
1971 - First Thoughts of a New Church
July 19, 1971 Discussion of a preaching station in Suamico began.
June 27, 1972 The first meeting of interested parties was held.
1972 - First Worship Service Held
1973 - Granted Mission Status
May 11, 1973 The WELS General Board of Home Missions granted the small group mission status.
June 6, 1973 A meeting to choose a name for the congregation, adopt a constitution and elect the first officers was held.
July 1973 The congregation incorporated.
1973 - Calling a Pastor
November 6, 1973 Mt Olive was granted the right to call its first resident pastor.
July 7, 1974 Keith B Kuschel was ordained and installed as pastor.
1975 - Purchasing Land and Construction
June 23, 1975 three acres of land were purchased. By July 9 the right to plan a parsonage was granted by the WELS Board of Home Missions and on November 3, the right to plan a church was granted.
January 1976 construction of the parsonage began. It was occupied on April 23, 1976 and dedicated on June 6.
September 7, 1976 Ground breaking ceremony for the church.
1977 - First Worship Service in New Church
May 8, 1977 Our growing congregation worshiped in their new church. A Dedication Ceremony was celebrated on June 5.
January 1978 Mt. Olive records 95 souls and 68 communicants. January 1979 Membership rose to 114 souls with 80 communicants.
1979 - Calling a New Pastor
January 14, 1979 Pastor Kuschel delivered his final sermon as Mt Olive’s Pastor after accepting a call to Christ Redeemer, in Trumbull, CT
April 29, 1979 Pastor Larry Nast accepted the call and was installed as the second resident pastor. At that time the church recorded 149 souls with 94 communicants.
During the next couple of years a choir and youth group began.
1983 - 10th Anniversary
September 1982 Major landscaping work on the property was done.
August 28, 1983 The 10th anniversary service was held and the congregation numbered over 200 souls.
1990 - Addition to Our Building
September 1990 Ground was broken for an addition with education, fellowship, kitchen, and office space. New pews, an organ, and paved parking were also added. Mt. Olive also grew in spirit.
1998 the congregation of nearly 250 communicants celebrated its 25th anniversary.
2013 - Calling Pastor Snyder
July 2013 Pastor Nast retired.
July 14, 2013 Pastor Brad Snyder was ordained and installed as pastor.
2016 - Discussions of Building Expansion and Second Site
2018 - Building Expansion
June 2018 We had the Alliance Construction and WELS Kingdom Workers Builder’s for Christ teams on site during the summer to help with our building addition, which included an expanded entry to provide a larger space for gathering after worship, a new office, updated restrooms and a copy and work room.
September 30, 2018 We held a dedication service for our new addition, inviting back the members of Builders for Christ that helped with us with the project. The service was followed by a potluck meal. Mt. Olive membership at the time of the dedication serviced numbered 311 souls.
2019 - Pastor Snyder Accepts a Call
January 27, 2019 Pastor Snyder preaches for the final time as pastor at Mt. Olive having accepted a call to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Boise, Idaho as their education pastor in December 2018.
